Internet sites like Monster list all sorts of job opportunities. You need to scan all areas that even remotely fit your job experience or skills. The one job description you do not read may be the one that would hire you. You can send your resume out to several companies at once easily. This makes it a more efficient means then it used to be back before the Internet.
Use the social network sites to sell yourself. There are even sites for professional people to have their profiles on. Included in these profiles is a mini resume most of the time. Also remove any unprofessional online sites that can be found by googling or searching your name. Employers are doing this more today and finding applicants doing some very embarrassing things online.

With freelancing jobs you need often times to prove yourself reliable more because a lot of these kinds of jobs are work at home. Not all employers feel comfortable with freelancers unless they doubly give proof they can work without supervision. You also many times have to bid on jobs so you have to know what the going rate is at the time.
Do not overlook email discussion groups. Yahoo has plenty of these. Some do help you network with people to find job leads. These lists are a great way to catch up on what is going on in the work place also. You may even make some friends that will give you recommendations for jobs at places they work at.
Make yourself a website that showcases your skills. If you are a writer (creative, freelance, or technical) you can write a web page on your field of expertise. This way you can show a prospective employer how well you write. You can do your website on whatever your expertise is. If you were in advertising before you left the work force, do some research and talk about new trends in advertising. This shows how you have stayed up with what is going on in your field.
